“I Can’t Eat Your Copper”

Sun, 11 May 2008 10:10:38 PDT
“I Can’t Eat Your Copper” From the “I Wish I Had Said That” department: “Developers understandably want to make money. And city authorities like to sell valuable properties to collect taxes to augment the city coffers. But who considers the people’s heritage? The situation reminds us of what Chief Powhatan said to Capt. John Smith when Powhatan didn’t want to sell anymore corn to the early colonists because his wise men had already told him before 1607 that foreigners were going to come t

Rome's newly elected Mayor Gianni Alemanno has said that he is open to an invitation to take part in the city's Gay Pride parade. Alemanno, whose electoral victory this year gave Italy's conservative forces their first Mayor of Rome in 15 years, told a Viva Radio2 audience that he wanted to know more about the plans of gay activists. "I have to understand better how it works," he said. "I have to speak with them." Rome's new conservative mayor open to gay-pride celebration Catholic

The news I hope not to watch

Sun, 11 May 2008 10:11:41 PDT
In 5 minutes I will turn on ABC’s This Week, a one hour talk show about the news. I used to enjoy this show tremendously. Sunday mornings are a good time for news, especially since the daily Sunday newspaper seems to have disappeared. (The Sunday morning newspaper is all I need, but you can’t subscribe only to that). This Week seems to have declined in quality because their discussion group is so calcified. George Will uses every topical issue to inject a swipe at liberal ideology. Cokie Robe

Myanmar no Longer Matters?

Sun, 11 May 2008 10:12:16 PDT
Seems That Way Wow, thank goodness the problems in Myanmar are all fixed. That was fast, huh? Of course, I am being sarcastic. But it seems like this horrible catastrophe--one of the worst in human history, if the numbers are to be believed--is no longer important enough to attract the attention of the American press. I admit, I don't stare at cable news all day, but I do turn it on a few times every day, and what are people talking about? Obama and gas prices. Am I wrong? That's how it seems

Michelle Obama has spoken; No VP Hillary

Sun, 11 May 2008 10:12:18 PDT
http://www.onebigdog.net/michelle-obama-has-spoken-no-vp-hillary/. There has been a buzz about an Obama/Clinton ticket since the early days of the primaries when media types fawned over both candidates and lamented how they wish that a vote could be cast for each. Will you run on one ticket, a dream ticket? Early on Hillary said that the idea was a good one but it remained to be determined who would get top billing and Barack seemed open to the idea with similar concerns about top billing. Wi

Listening with Social Media: Social Media Archaeologists

Sat, 10 May 2008 13:06:10 PDT
As part of Spring cleaning, I stumbled upon a report from a 6th grade report that I wrote about Primitive Man and His Cave Drawings. The last page was about archaeologists - people who dig up the past with tools like sieves and shovels. How can we become digital archaeologists who use social media to dig up real time information to understand the right now? What is listening? Let's take the definition from Josh Bernhoff from this YouTube video from the Forrester Consumer Forum. "Lear

Life In Rural New Jersey

Sat, 10 May 2008 13:22:18 PDT
They say a man’s home is his castle and I can’t disagree. My wife has been transforming the castle grounds into a thriving massive garden over the past 3 years and as a result, we’ve attracted a bevy of new friends. One of these new friends is the Scarlet Tanager. I’ve never seen this type of bird before and thought they were just lost in our area. After identifying this fine feathered friend, I found out that NJ is part of their range and they tend to winter in Southern parts of the country

Better Mobile Data Needed To Secure More Mobile Ad Dollars

Sat, 10 May 2008 14:14:37 PDT
Marketing via cellphones is forecast to be one of the next hot trends, but many advertisers are still hesitant to empty their pockets on mobile-ad campaigns. One reason: There isn't yet a reliable source of data that show what Web sites and features consumers are accessing on their mobile devices. Measurement firms such as Nielsen and M:Metrics, which have relied mainly on monthly consumer surveys to gather such information, are developing electronic tracking methods that aim to provide more sp

Search Engine and Spark: A Tale of Two CBC Technology Shows

Sat, 10 May 2008 14:31:33 PDT
Last September, CBC Radio launched two new technology shows: Search Engine and Spark. I forget how I first heard about them, but I subscribed to both podcasts from their first episode. Search Engine is a show about the cultural and politics of the web (they need a copyable blurb on their home page and in iTunes). The most recent episode featured stories on the hacker convention Defcon, gaming the CIA’s website and a rapping Hungarian YouTube star. Here’s the spiel on Spark: Spark is a weekly

An Open Source Proposal

Sat, 10 May 2008 14:37:31 PDT
In this post, I discuss, in outline form, the things we are considering as we develop an open source proposal. Our decision process is more complex than most other OS companies since we have put over two decades of work building an architecture and wide range of diverse applications that incorporate a patented disruptive technology. I welcome your feedback. In order to clarify our current mind-set, I've included a brief description of our existing source code modules, data library modules, and

The Price of the Surge: Iraq... by Steven Simon from Foreign Affairs

Sat, 10 May 2008 14:40:49 PDT
The Price of the Surge By Steven Simon From Foreign Affairs , May/June 2008 Summary: The Bush administration's new strategy in Iraq has helped reduce violence. But the surge is not linked to any sustainable plan for building a viable Iraqi state and may even have made such an outcome less likely -- by stoking the revanchist fantasies of Sunni tribes and pitting them against the central government. The recent short-term gains have thus come at the expense of the long-term goal of a stable, unitar

Intranets are not information dumps

Sat, 10 May 2008 15:18:25 PDT
The first step in creating a genuinely useful intranet is to ban the intranet team from using the word “information”. “‘Distribute information’ is by far the primary perceived role of the intranet, increasing by 7 points from 2006 up to nearly 60 percent saying “absolutely” in 2007. However, “facilitate collaboration” stagnated at 20 percent and “facilitate productivity” only increased 3 points to 22 percent in 2007.” The above is a quote from the second annual Global Intranet & Portal Strate

Pentecost news - I hope not!

Sat, 10 May 2008 15:53:52 PDT
Sally gives her answers to a “Pentecost Friday 5″ of personal questions from her fellow Revgals. I don’t propose to join in this female pastors’ little game. But, in the light of current discussions, here is my answer to the bonus question What would a modern day news coverage of the first Pentecost have sounded like? There will be more Baal worshippers than Christians in Jerusalem by the year 50! According to a new publication Religious Trends, the number of Christians shows a decline from
