Blog Video Comments

Wed, 23 Apr 2008 17:08:12 PDT
It's too bad I don't have a WordPress blog, because the folks at TechCrunch just announced something exciting! The ability to leave video comments on their complete blog family. The video comments are powered by Seesmic, and you can see examples on this comment thread at TechCrunch. Watch an overview of the offering here: I can't think of a cooler way for blogging to really move to a "conversation", as it brings a much more personal aspect to the contributions of readers to the discussion.

Wal-Mart Is Rationing Rice Purchases

Wed, 23 Apr 2008 17:15:16 PDT
That’s right. Rice is being rationed. In America. NEW YORK (MarketWatch)—Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said its Sam’s Club wholesale club chain is limiting the sale of some rice to four bags per member visit because of what it described as “supply and demand trends.” Jasmine, basmati and long-grain white rices will be subject to those purchase restrictions, as long as they are allowed by law, in the 594 clubs across the U.S., said Sam’s Club spokeswoman Kristy Reed. New Mexico and Idaho are the o

Designing Web apps for the entire world

Panelists get together at the Web 2.0 Expo to talk about design led by Aaron Marcus (who is donning a horn-tipped hat).(Credit: CNET Networks / Josh Lowensohn) The last panel sessions for day two of the Web 2.0 Expo just wrapped up. One of my favorites was global design trends, a panel discussing the Web design around the world. In my less than two years of tracking Web apps, I've seen a huge shift in the look and feel of mainstream sites, as well as seeing a slew of services that have pushed

They Durk Ur Ideas

Wed, 23 Apr 2008 17:36:14 PDT
The immigration debate will never completely go away. Some anti-immigration types like it that way. Some immigration hawks really are driven by an honest sense of law and order, and fear of crime is particularly susceptible to anecdotal support (except when crime-rate statistics overwhelmingly argue against that fear, which, in L.A., they don’t). It’s an interesting paradox. Nearly all trends are going the way the restrictionists want. Some researchers say that border crossings peaked back in 2

Did Comcast Lie About Slowing Down P2P Traffic? Comcast]

Wed, 23 Apr 2008 17:36:46 PDT
When I was talking to Comcast for my round up of ISP network management practices (pre-BT deal), we talked a lot about how they manage p2p traffic, and they were very clear that the temporary slowdowns were "surgical," (their word) and only employed during heavy congestion. So I'd been using that caveat anytime I brought it up, out of fairness. FCC Chairman Kevin Martin told a Senate committee this week that Comcast lied about that: "It does not appear that this technique was used only to occas

Costco CEO Blames Media For Recent Run on Rice

Wed, 23 Apr 2008 17:44:41 PDT
In case you hadn't heard, the world is running scared about the world running out of rice. As a result, here in America, various food retailers have actually begun rationing the amount of the white stuff consumers are allowed to buy. Deliciously -- pun definitely intended -- the CEO of the nation's leading warehouse club, Costco's James Sinegal, blamed a lot of the problem on the media. As marvelously reported by Reuters Wednesday (emphasis added throughout): Costco Chief Executive James Sine

Hey Lampmates! I know, it’s been a minute. Esso recently asked me to update y’all with what’s been going on since the wedding. After going back and reading my last blog “The Countdown Continues,” I’m even more convinced of the benefit in doing so…So, I think it’s best to start with the prayer requests Trish and I had for the Wedding/Marriage, then bring you guys up to speed so y’all know what I’ve been up to recently. We asked for you to pray that… …the Lord would continue to give us wisdom,

Stagnating, declining life expectancy in segments of US population

Wed, 23 Apr 2008 18:00:07 PDT
The bottomline of a report on life expectancy in the United States is role of self-destructive personal behavior -- unprotected sex, smoking, fatty foods, and lack of exercise. But is it ultimately a failure of society, including the church, to identify the hurt and provide a message of hope? Harvard Medicine+Science reports: A new, long-term study of mortality trends in U.S. counties from 1960 to 2000 finds that an overall average life expectancy increase of 6.5 years for men and women is no

If Your Intuition Is Talking, Listen!

Wed, 23 Apr 2008 18:16:13 PDT
Intuition is a primal gut instinct, built in for survival. When your pet senses danger – it retreats and follows its gut instinct. Humans are the only living creatures that ignore those primal gut instincts. We are the only living creatures that sense danger - yet continue to move toward it. Lynn Robinson, Author of “Trust Your Gut: How The Power of Intuition Can Grow Your Business” and Founder of LynnRobinson.com, is our featured guest in this Episode of The Small Business Trends Radio. HPC User Forum: Interconnect Panel Last week I attended the IDC HPC User Forum meeting in Norfolk, Virginia. The meeting brings together HPC users and vendors for two days of presentation and discussion about all things HPC. The theme of this meeting (26th in the series) was CFD -- Computational Fluid Dynamics. In addition to numerous talks on various aspects of CFD, there were a series of short vendor talks and four panel sessions with both industry and user members. I sat on both the int

Famine? Check. When's Pestilence Coming?

Wed, 23 Apr 2008 13:48:59 PDT
How are you like Oliver Twist? Give up? Similar to that famous fictional orphan, you can’t have all the food you want, either. Why? Because the world is fucked! Wal-Mart Stores Inc’s Sam’s Club warehouse division said on Wednesday it is limiting sales of several types of rice, the latest sign that fears of a rice shortage are rippling around the world. Sam’s Club, the No. 2 U.S. warehouse club operator, said it is limiting sales of Jasmine, Basmati and long grain white rice “due to recent s

Information Cascades Lead to the Housing Crisis Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008 3:54 pm Contributed by: ec284 This article written by Robert Shiller featured in the NY Times tries to explain why experts, such as Alan Greenspan, were unable to detect the housing bubble that was forming in the 1990s. The article reports that because of the failure to recognize and address the housing bubble, financial markets in the US and abroad are paying the price. It was not that all the experts were “stupid

White socks + black pants = ???

Wed, 23 Apr 2008 13:57:31 PDT
A colleague and I were on our way out of the office today for lunch. But, before we left, she had to ask “I’m wearing white socks with black pants, will you be seen with me?” She was kidding, of course, but she has a point. Some fashion faux pas are open for debates: pleats, sweater vests, sandals with socks. OK, maybe not the last one. My friend is not a fashion maven. In fact, she’d readily admit, she’s not that into clothing. As long as it’s clean, and somewhat season-appropriate, she’ll we

Neuroscience of meditation and attention

Wed, 23 Apr 2008 14:01:19 PDT
This month's Trends in Cognitive Sciences has a fantastic review article on the neuroscience of meditation - focusing on how the contemplative practice alters and sharpens the brain's attention systems. The full article is available online as a pdf, and discusses what cognitive science studies have told us about the short and long-term impact of meditation on the mind and brain. Meditation is now being quite extensively studied by cognitive science owing to the clear effects it has on the bra

Administrative Assistant's Day and the Growing Online Virtual Assistant Industry

Wed, 23 Apr 2008 14:02:15 PDT
For any of us that have run businesses; both online or offline, we know the extreme value of a high quality administrative assistant. They can be the difference between not only a smooth running, stress-resistant work environment, and a chaotic mess, but the difference between the success or failure of a business. It's Administrative Assistant's Day today, and they deserve a big thank you and show of appreciation for everything they've done to make our businesses a success. Having said that,

Understanding How Educational Freedom Improves Education

Wed, 23 Apr 2008 14:08:31 PDT
Understanding How Educational Freedom Improves Education by Michael Strong The Conversation April 23rd, 2008 Richard Rothstein is concerned that If we deregulate the teacher market, we will undoubtedly attract some very high quality teachers who might not have made it through the certification hoops. We will also attract some incompetents, who will do serious harm to our children. How many of the latter are we willing to tolerate in order to gain the benefits of the former? My response t

Graphing Russell Martin

Wed, 23 Apr 2008 14:09:43 PDT
Inspired by Sax's graph of the "Andrew Jones Industrial Average", I decided to take a closer look at the conventional wisdom that says Russell Martin's '07 was superb until the last month, at which point the wear and tear of the season took its toll. Certainly a perfunctory look at his batting average by month seems to support this theory: Month Average April '07 0.314 May '07 0.293 June '07 0.284 July '07 0.303 Aug '07 0.300 Sept '07 0.259 Why, he batted no lower than 0.

A news junkie’s dream …. or nightmare

Wed, 16 Apr 2008 10:46:47 PDT
I am a news junkie and admittedly if I had cable plus the extra TV I would probably have either CNN or CBC Newsworld on the whole time I’m in my room I jokingly call my office. So when I saw Brian Solis’ post about local broadcast news going social I was at first rather skeptical of the the idea; after all everything these days is having the social sticker slapped on its ass like it is going to be the road to instant riches or something. But when I clicked on the LiveNewsComeras.com link (go

Instead of dealing with the serious issue at hand, alleged election overspending, the Con's are as usual pointing fingers at the Lib's and anyone else they can think of as a diversion. One of their favourite attack dogs, Pierre Poilievre apparently sees a conspiracy here. Ottawa-area Conservative Pierre Poilievre (PWAH'-lee-ehv) goes further, accusing Elections Canada of inviting the Liberal party to watch the raid unfold. Note to Petey. The Lib's have said that they saw the story on Newsworl

Cons: RCMP Raid Was a 'Publicity Stunt'

Wed, 16 Apr 2008 13:10:43 PDT
Pass the tissues. Oh how I weep for those poor victims of the RCMP raid of the Cons' headquarters. Not. The tories are scrambling to paint themselves as being oppressed after yesterday's raid (which continues today). The problem is that they appointed the two Elections Canada officials they're now suing and that they applaud the RCMP (even protecting Zaccardelli to the bitter end) except when they're the targets of a legally-sanctioned warrant. And now, they're also trying to implicate the Li

Canadian socialist IRONY DU JOUR: CBC calls Zimbabwe’s media “state-run”

Thu, 17 Apr 2008 12:35:21 PDT
Canadian socialist IRONY DU JOUR: CBC calls Zimbabwe’s media “state-run” This morning, the state-run, state-owned CBC Newsworld state-media employed news anchor, Suhana Meharchand, referred to Zimbabwe’s “state-run news media” and how they are accusing the political opposition of treason. Canada’s state-owned, state-run CBC never refers to itself that way! Now. Countdown to liberals and sundry leftist and downright Marxist CBC apologists emailing me those seething reprimands insisting
